Signs You May Have Termites

August 23, 2019

Termites can cause a lot of damage to your home, especially if left untreated. However, they can also be hard to detect, and by the time you notice their presence, they’ve likely already done quite a number on your property. Fortunately, there are some signs that you may have termites, in which case you need to call for termite treatment in central Illinois as soon as possible. Before your property suffers significant damage that alerts you to the reality that you have termites, look out for these warning signs so you can take care of the problem:

  • Drywall problems: Watch your drywall for signs of damage if you suspect you may have termites. Discolored or drooping drywall, as well as small pinholes in the drywall are both signs of termite activity.
  • Moisture: You also want to keep a look out for signs of water damage, such as peeling paint, buckling wooden or laminate floorboards or tiles loosening from excess moisture, which can serve as entry points for termites.
  • Wood damage: Wood damage from termites can take many forms. Look out for excessively squeaky floorboards, crumbling, damaged wood and wood that sounds hollow when you tap on it. Also notice if your windows or doors are sticking, and look for maze-like patterns in your furniture, walls and floor boards. If you start noticing this type of damage, you’ll want to get termite treatment in central Illinois right away.
  • Wings: After swarms, termites will leave behind discarded wings that look like fish scales. Swarms can take place both inside and outside the home when mature termites leave the nest to begin new colonies. Soon after they begin flying, they’ll shed their wings, leaving piles in or around your home. You may find them on windowsills, spiderwebs or in piles around the house’s foundation.
  • Droppings: You may also want to be on the lookout for termite droppings, which are signs of drywood termites. These pellets look like tiny mounds of salt or pepper. This is also the type of termites that will cause sagging in your floors and walls that look like water damage.
  • Mud tubes: Subterranean termites live underground and build shelter tubes to bridge between their colony and the wood they’re feeding on. Look for these tubes made of soil, wood and debris around the foundation of your home, as they are a certain sign of a termite infestation.
