Why Are Bugs More Active in the Summer?

July 21, 2022

Most of us look forward to summer. There is nothing like long sunny days and warm nights. Unfortunately, the warmer weather also means that bugs are more active. Why are there more bugs in the summer?

Let’s check out a few reasons why these crawly critters may annoy us more in the summer months.

1. Temperature

Many insects are cold-blooded, meaning their body temperature changes with the outside temperature. They are most active when it is warm because that is when they can move the fastest.

When it is cold, they tend to slow down and may even go into a dormant state.

2. Food

Bugs are always looking for food, and there is more of it available in the summer. Flowers are blooming, fruit is ripening, and leaves are growing. Most insects feed off of plant life, except mosquitos and flies who rely on blood or decaying matter for food.

Such an abundance of food means that more bugs can survive and reproduce.

3. Water

Like all living things, insects need water to survive. In the summer, there is more water available from rain and melting snow. This means more bugs can make it through the hot, dry days.

In winter climates, water is often scarce or frozen, so many bugs die off.

4. Hibernation

In winter, some insects will hibernate or go into a state of dormancy. This means that they slow down their metabolism and don’t move around much.

When spring comes, they wake up and start reproducing. This awakening can result in a population boom that continues into summer.

5. Migration

Many insects migrate to find food or warmer weather. For example, ladybugs will fly south for the winter and then return in the spring.

Some bugs, like mosquitoes, can travel long distances in search of food and water. As they travel, they can spread diseases like malaria and Zika virus.

6. Shelter

In the summer, bugs can find shelter from the heat in shady areas or in water. They can also find shelter in our homes where it is cool and there is plenty of food.

As the weather gets colder, many insects will try to get into our homes to escape the cold. This can result in infestations that are difficult to get rid of.

Protect Yourself From Bugs

Seal up any cracks or openings in your home so that bugs can’t get inside. Keep your yard free of debris and standing water where insects can breed.

You can also call a professional pest control company to help you get rid of your bug problem.

Summertime Is Fun Time for Bugs

Why do bugs get worse in the summer? Bugs are more active in the summer because of the warmer weather and the abundance of food. This can result in more bugs in your home or insect bites when you are outdoors. Take a few precautions to make sure bugs don’t ruin your summer fun!
