Factors That Could Increase Your Chances of a Summer Spider Infestation

August 21, 2022

With the weather warming up, spiders emerge from their winter hiding spots. If you’re unlucky enough to live in an area with many spiders, you could face a summer spider infestation. In this blog post, we will discuss some of the factors that could increase your chances of summer spider infestation.

Why Is My House Infested With Spiders This Summer?

The major question is, are spiders more common in the summer? The answer to this is generally yes, although there are many factors that could contribute to a spider infestation in your home during any season. Spiders are most active in the spring and summer when they’re looking for mates, but they can also enter homes in search of food or shelter. Some other causes include:

The Weather

The warmer weather that comes along with summertime is ideal for spiders. Spiders are cold-blooded creatures, so they prefer warm temperatures. If your home is particularly warm or humid, it could be more attractive to spiders. In addition, severe weather conditions like heavy rains or floods can drive spiders indoors in search of drier conditions.

Cracks and Crevices in Your Home

Spiders can enter your home through any tiny crack or crevice they can find. Check for cracks in your foundation, gaps around windows and doors, and holes in screens. Seal up these openings with caulk or weather-stripping to prevent spiders from getting inside.

While you’re at it, take a look around your yard. Spiders like to build their webs in areas that are protected from the elements, so trimming back bushes and trees near your home will make it less inviting for them. Also, clean up any piles of leaves, firewood, or debris where they could hide.

Outdoor Lighting

If your home is situated near a lot of outdoor lighting, that could attract spiders. These creatures are attracted to light, so if you have lamps or security lights set up near your home, it could be an open invitation for them to come inside. If you’re dealing with a spider infestation, try turning off these lights at night and see if that makes a difference. You may also want to invest in some yellow "bug" light bulbs, as these are less attractive to insects and spiders.

Food Sources

Spiders are drawn to homes where they can find an abundance of food. If you have a lot of insects in and around your home, that could be attracting spiders. Be sure to keep your yard free of debris and standing water, as these are breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other pests. In addition, regularly vacuum and dust your home to remove any food sources that spiders could be after.

By taking these precautionary measures, you can help deter spiders from setting up shop in and around your home this summer.
