Signs Your Home May Have Termites
Termites are a multi-billion dollar problem, and unless you can catch them in the act early, they can cause severe damage to your home. That’s why it’s important to know your home’s warning signs. Here are a few to look for:
Swarmers
If you see swarmers, it may be an indication of termites in your home. These winged insects are the reproductives of termite colonies and they fly away to mate and start new ones. Swarmers can be found near windows, doorways and other places that are easily accessible to termites. If you notice a swarm, it’s time to have the problem inspected by a professional pest control service.
Mud Tubes
Termites build mud tubes to help them stay moist and avoid drying out as they travel between the ground and their nests. They also use these tunnels as a way to get from one food source to another. Termite mud tubes can appear like narrow veins along the wall or foundation of your home. They start at the ground and tend to run towards areas with exposed wood. Mud tubes can be found anywhere around a home, but are most easily seen along foundation walls or outside concrete. If you see any mud tubes, call a termite control professional immediately!
Damaged Wood
Termites are one of the most common pests that damage wooden buildings and structures. These tiny insects eat through the wood in your home and are responsible for thousands of dollars worth of damage every year. They don’t just eat wood though, as they can tunnel through almost any material that contains cellulose, including wallpaper and carpeting.
Swollen Panels
If you notice swollen floor or ceiling panels, it is likely an indication that you have subterranean termites. These pests can eat through floors and walls without any warning, leaving behind wood that is swollen, buckling or warping. These swollen areas are easy to mistake for water damage, but they are an important sign that you need to call in an expert. If the swollen area is not treated quickly, it can lead to further damage and expensive repairs down the road.
